“We fled to the bushes at about 5AM- Monday, On coming back, the damage has already been done.I don’t even know where the rest of my family members are”. A Santa Njong residents tells DRAY INFO.
Many houses have been razed and livestock lost in Santa
Njong, a village in Santa sub division of the North West Region Of Cameroon in
an attack by those whom eye witnesses say were heavily armed men dressed in
military wears.Report from a source in Santa say, well armed men stormed the
village at about 4am- Monday firing indiscriminately, before setting some
houses ablaze. It is still not clear what caused the raid but according to Daniel,
a teacher who was in the village on vacation, the raid cannot be unconnected with
the ongoing war in the North West and South West Regions of Cameroon. He said
he had just finished praying and was just laying on his bed when he started
hearing gun shots. “It was at about some few minutes to 5AM that
I finished praying and was laying on my bed when I started hearing gun shots. I
could also hear footsteps as many took to their heels as the gun shots
intensified. We were four in the house and we took off to different directions.
I don’t even know where the rest of my family is. Thank God my parents had long
moved out of the village ever since Santa started having her own share of the
pains caused by the ongoing war. ”“As I speak, many have fled the villages and
are in the bushes while others are in neighbouring communities”.“when
I returned from the bush where I ran to for safety, I met many houses
that have been touched by fire, others lost food stuffs and livestock in the
raid”.. He added.
DRAY INFO has not been able to confirm reports that lives
may have also been lost in the raid.Family members in Bamenda have been
expressing worries saying they have been unable to reach out to their relatives
back home in Santa Njong after they got
news about what had happened. They say calls have not been going through.
·
It should be noted that, Santa Sub Division for
some time now has not been at peace as a result of the Anglophone crises. Many
lives have been lost and many have been forced to flee their villages to areas
they considered to be safe.
