Heavy Gun Battles Mar School Resumption In The North West Region.
By
Raymond Dingana.
The 2019/2020 academic year in the North West Region has taken off
amidst heavy gun battles between Cameroon’s security forces and Pro
Independence fighters, Monday September 02, 2019. Coupled with
the ghost town and lock down operations called for by separatist leaders abroad
and enforced by armed men on the ground, parts of Mezam, Bui, Ndonga Mantung, Nkoketunjia,
Menchum and Boyo Divisions got up to thunderous gun shots that forced many to
stay indoors. In Bamenda, streets in the neighborhoods of Nkwen, Travelers,
Nanga Junction, Ntarinkon, and many others were disserted following heavy gun
battles between Cameroon’s security forces and Pro Independence fighters .All
these affected school resumption in the region negatively as many were forced
to stay indoors.
At the Bamenda I Sub Division where DrayInfos visited on day one of school resumption, three schools
were visited. At the Ecole Public Les Champions at Up Station Bamenda, out of
the five hundred and forty pupils that
were expected on campus on day one of school resumption, forty answered
present, twenty five boys and fifteen girls with seven teachers all females
present to teach the children.
DrayInfos also
visited Ecole Maternelle Du Camp Militaire where all teachers where on campus with
only two girls to teach. The head teacher of the school called on parents to
send their children to school saying the teachers were ready to teach them. By
the time DrayInfos got to the
school, the kids had already had some lessons same too with the other school we
visited.
Ecole Public Francophone Du Camp Militaire, another school in the
military camp had eleven teachers out of fifteen and fourteen kids .A teacher
we met intimated to us that, they were actually expecting three hundred and
eighty pupils to answer present. He was however optimistic saying many more
parents were still coming around to secure places for their children.
It should be noted that, Bamenda I Sub Division is the head
quarters of the North West Administration with the highest level of security in
the region. Unfortunately, this did not boost the number of kids that turned
out for day one of school resumption. Talking to DrayInfos, a parent working with the judicial family in Bamenda said,
the number of kids that answered present on day one of school resumption is a clear
indication that, some uniform officers did not also send their kids to school. However,
hopes are high that, as the days go by, the number of pupils and students will
also increase.
