Pre Dialogue Brainstorming Meeting In Bamenda: Root Causes, Cease Fire, Amnesty, Form Of State Dominate Talks.
By
Raymond Dingana.
In order for the North West Region of Cameroon to better prepare
for the upcoming dialogue, the governor of the North West Region last September
21, 2019 organized a pre dialogue brainstorming meeting that brought together participants
from all walks of life at the MINEPAT hall Up Station, Bamenda. Many of those
who answered present at the meeting suggested that, for the dialogue to bear
any meaningful fruits, the root causes should be looked in to, all those
arrested as a result of the crises be granted amnesty, a cease fire be declared,
power alternation between Francophones and Anglophones, the form of the state
be discussed, decentralization not a solution to the Anglophone crises, English
and French be given equal status, independent judicial system among others should be given pride of place.
One of those who attended the brainstorming meeting was the Auxiliary
Bishop of Bamenda, His Lordship Michael Bibi. He says: “For the dialogue to be successful, it will entail that we be truthful,
sincere, look at the root causes in order to arrive at a lasting solution to
the problem so that what we are experiencing now should never repeat itself
again. Amba fighters and the military
should change their approach, to respect human life and the dignity that goes
with human life. The proper people controlling the boys on the ground based in
the Diaspora be met and back home, even those who have been in prison because
of the crises, be granted amnesty so that the reconciliation process can take place for peace to return in the NW/SW regions of
Cameroon
Adolph LeLe L’afrigue, is NW
governor. He says: “The people are of the opinion that dialogue should be the solution to
bring back peace to the region and that they should be well represented and
their message should be carried to the appropriate quarters”.
The governor also addressed the
worries of those questioning the objectivity of the chair person of
the dialogue by saying that: “A dialogue is well when it is well prepared.
From the education i am observing, if we are quite sure that the dialogue will
be well prepared in the NWR, i am quite sure that the outcome will meet the
expectations of the people of the NWR”.
Many also used the meeting to decry
other aspects of national life that are also sick. A trader asked the question
as to why with the thousands of soldiers in Bamenda and its environs, their
shops are coming under attack on a daily basis.
A commercial bike riders and a
driver say they are facing a lot of challenges from both the military and the
pro independence fighters. They also said the military is helping to enforce
ghost town operations by extorting huge sums from them and other poor treatments
meted on them by the military. They say such moves only help to discourage them
from coming out on such days thereby enforcing ghost town operations.
According to a traditional ruler
from a village in Santa sub division, many delegations have left Yaounde to
Bamenda only to go back and tell Paul Biya that there is no problem. He also
said, the military has to change its approach and be friendly with the people
saying they are supposed to protect lifes and properties.
Ndi Tsembom Elvis Jr. is FECAFOOT SG for the
North West. He decried the lack of football pitches in the region. He says the
NWR doesn’t deserve just a single pitch and that, football pitches are needed
in all seven divisions for the professional league to be what it’s supposed to
be.
Tim is a journalist. He decried the
fact that, because some journalists have phone numbers of some top military
officials of the region, they call them and fabricate stories for colleagues to
be arrested. He also said some military officials are making huge gains from
the crises, reasons why they will never say the truth because they don’t want
the crises to end.
The population is now anxiously
waiting to know those that will be representing them on the dialogue table
while hoping that, the dialogue will end the Anglophone crises.
