During activities to celebrate the 2019 edition of the

2019 in Mulang, Bamenda II Sub Division of the North West Region of Cameroon,
the children underscored the need for Parents, Guardians and the Powers that be
to ensure that, all barriers limiting the Girl Child in the community are
pulled down. The children also used the day to frown at those who prefer to
empower only the Male Child there by relegating the Girl child to the background
saying, what a Male Child can do, a Girl Child can do and even better.
Celebrated with the theme; Girl Force: Unscripted, Unstoppable,
Empowering Girls For A Better Tomorrow, Plan International is at the
forefront saying No to Rape, Child Marriages ,Female Genital Mutilation ,Breast
Ironing among others and Yes to Empowering the Girl Child for a better tomorrow.
In other to make this happen, Plan International has created more
than forty Child Friendly Spaces in the Region which has bought together children
of both sexes with the Girl Child in the majority and many of them being
Internally Displaced as a result of the Anglophone crises.
Madam Sylvia Anyangwa Mbu is Child Protection in Emergency Coordinator. She
says the Child Friendly Spaces are there to offer psychosocial supports to children
amongst others. Read her: “These are spaces that are accessible
to children especially the internally displaced that are found in host communities.
In these spaces, Plan International offer psycho-social supports, Plan International carry out activities that
can help them shake off the stress that
they have gone through due to the crises, and has out in place some basic vocational training programs for
them. The spaces also serve as a forum where the children come and are safe from other dangers”.
At the Presbyterian Church in Mulang where one of such spaces is
found, Debra is a focal point working with Plan International. She says: “Plan International has been providing sanitary kids to the children; Plan International takes care of their
feeding and many others. Plan International also train parents and guidance on how to guide and
protect the children especially the Girl Child during emergencies”.
