Covid-19 Battle: Persons With Disabilities Call For Inclusion.

Persons with Disabilities in Bamenda say, the fight against covid-19
is not inclusive reasons why they have been facing a lot of difficulties .Speaking
to DrayInfos recently, the North West Regional President of the Coordinating Unit of the Associations of Persons with Disabilities, Mr.
Fru Chick Sama said, one of the challenges has to do with communication.
“Most of the communication is done without considering
the needs of persons with disabilities. For instance, those who have hearing
impairment will hardly understand the massage the radio and TV stations are
sending out. This is to say that, we need a lot of sign language
considerations. A lot of paper work is done on covid-19 prevention but this is
hardly considering the needs of persons with visually impairment. Two weeks
ago, I called the toll free number, 1510 indicating them, some persons also
need to communicate to them using text messages but this service is not open to
text messages especially by those who with gearing impairment. Those sharing
anti covid-19 kits should work with the Coordinating unit of the Association of
Persons with Disabilities. This is because they are persons who are paralyzed
and cannot walk and they too need the items”.

Mambi Paul, a person with mobility impairment said he has only been
getting information about the sharing of covid-19 kits but on the radio: “I have never been blessed to
receive the anti-covid-19 kits from the government and other NGOs but for the
CBC Health Services. I have only heard about the sharing but on radio and TV but
because of my condition, I have not been able to receive because they don’t
seem to care about us. In anything especially during pandemics like this one,
persons with disabilities should come first because they are most vulnerable.
If all of us can have it in mind that, today, I can be a normal person and
tomorrow a person with disability, we will always put them first”.

Ntoh Sharon, a person with hearing and speech impairment, is also the
secretary of the Association for the Empowerment of the Deaf and Vulnerable
Persons. With the help of a sign language interpreter in the person of Madam
Young Regina Awafe, Sharon was categorical of their plight
“Maintaining
social distancing is one of the challenges faced by us. This is because since we
don’t hear, communicating with us means touching us. There is also the problem
of access to information because of lack of sufficient Sign Language Interpreters.
We also lack enough resources to purchase anti Covid -19 kits. This is because
we depend on small business activities which have been dealt with first, by the
Anglophone Crisis and now Corona Virus. Messages that air aired on radio and
TV, we can’t get them because the few sign language interpreters are underused”.
