Nigerian Union Wages War Against Maltreatment Of Domestic Servants.

The Nigerian Union under the
presidency of Prince Otobong Ituen has declared that, there will be no hiding place
for Nigerians, who treat their house helps as slaves. During his visit to the
people of Abia State in Bamenda, Sunday August 23, 2020 at the Union's secretariat,
Prince Otobong said, any Nigerian who treats his or her house help like a slave
will be prosecuted.
“I was to sound this note of warning that; I will not hesitate to join with the forces of law and order to prosecute any Nigerian who treats their domestic servants like slaves. Slave trade has been abolished many years ago. No Nigerian has the right to take any body living under their roof as a slave. They should take this warning seriously before it is too late”. Prince Otobong warned.

According to the president of the Women’s
Wing of the Union, Mrs. Margaret
Ovayozo Ituen, the issue of maltreating house helps did not start today. She
said, when the recent case was reported to them, she and her Esco- Members
swung in to immediate action:
“ We arrived at a resolution that, henceforth, we are going to put a heavy fine of as much as one hundred thousand francs on any woman who abuses any child leaving under her roof or serving her as a house help. We also decided that, before the fine is paid, we as Nigerian women will match to the perpetrators with grass in our hands in protest to prove to them that, the abuse of house helps is unacceptable. Every mother should be a mother to every child whether the child is hers or not.” She intimated.

During the visit, the Abians also raised the problem of military extortion along the Bamenda-Ekok Road and the kidnapping of their people by armed men. Prince Otobong used the event to call on victims of kidnap to forward their names to the union for onward transmission to the Nigerian Consulate General. He also warned Nigerians against interfering in the politics of their host country. He said anyone interested in doing politics should go to Nigeria and do it there. He added that, he is working on membership cards for Nigerians saying; the card will show prove of belonging and will first be presented before some official documents are issued.

Gifts were handed to the president and his wife by the Abia community also known as God’s Own State. There was also a talk on the prevention of Covid-19 by Mr. Tataw Orock from Doctors without Borders.
