Reconstruction Of NW/SW: Religious Authorities Didn't Speak For Us-Bamenda Population
By Raymond Dingana
Many in
Bamenda have been reacting to the recent outing by religious authorities in the
North West Region of Cameroon accusing them of taking sides with government and
not the suffering masses in the two restive regions of the country. This came
days after news went wild that, religious leaders from Anglophone Cameroon have
met in Douala and backed government's reconstruction and development plan for the
regions.
According
to Mr. Nkwenti, a Catholic Christian, he has had enough from the church because
the church has been playing politics pretending to care about the masses though not speaking for them.
"The
church is selfish, the reason behind their latest outing is because church
offerings are not coming the way it use to be. They think only about themselves, did never represented us in that meeting. Again, their schools have
suffered a lot reasons why all they want to see is an end to the crisis even if
it has little to do with the wellbeing of the poor people. Their outing is
indicative of the fact that, there is a very big problem somewhere that needs
to be addressed, if not, is their backing needed for reconstruction and
development to take place? We all want development but not the politics they
are playing with the lives of Anglophones in the name of development. ". He said.
To this Miss Gorretti, a teacher by profession, the church has been compromised: “It is not as if, we don't love development but the truth is that, the church has been compromised. I expected the religious leaders to tell the powers that be that, development is not possible when the crisis has not ended. Are we reconstructing for dead people? Let the religious leaders be serious for Christ's sake. Let’s stop playing politics with people's lives.People keep dying on a daily basis". She lamented.

To this
other inhabitant of Bamenda who opted to be addressed as Deacon Mark, the fact
that Pentecostals were not invited to the meeting that gave birth to the
declaration by the religious authorities is clear indication that, they were speaking for themselves. He asked the question
as to why the voice of the population is hardly taken in to consideration in
matters that concern them. He furthered that, any initiative that has to do the
community which is not bottom top approach is bound to fail.
Worthy
of note is the fact that, the president of the Regional Participatory Follow-Up
Committee for the execution of Public Investment Projects and other
developmental projects for the North West, Hon. Wallang Richard indicated
Thursday July 30, 2020 during the first semester meeting for 2020, that, they
can be no meaningful development without peace.
All
fingers are now crossed to see how successful the reconstruction and
development plan for the North West and South West Regions will be with the war
still raging on.
