Bamenda City Council Blames Water, Energy Mess On Insecurity
By Raymond Dingana
The
Mayor of the Bamenda City Council, Achobong Tembeng Paul has blamed the Water
and Energy crisis the population is going through on the ongoing Socio-political
crisis.
The
Mayor was speaking during the 2020 Administrative and Management Account
session of the Bamenda City Council, Wednesday March 31.
One Of The Taps That Has Remained Dry For Years Because Of Water Crisis. |
He said the water crisis is as a result of the socio political crisis in Bamenda that has scared the contractors away.
"The
water project which we were supposed to catch water from a stream in Awing is
not going because of insecurity that has caused the contractors to leave,"
he said.
He
however assured the population that, the council has identified other sources that
will be developed in order that, the water crisis is brought under control.
"I
have had some catchments, some of the streams and springs which we are going to
develop and build some reservoirs where we can catch water and see how we can
arrest the water crisis in Bamenda and its environs," he
added.
On
electricity, mayor Achobong vindicated ENEO saying the epileptic electricity
situation in Bamenda is not their fault, but that of SONATREAL.
He said
SONATREAL has not been able to transport the transformers paid for by ENEO to Bamenda
because of the risky nature of the town and the region as a whole.
"ENEO
has to the best of my knowledge ordered for new transformers which have already
been bought and are laying idle in Douala. They have not arrived Bamenda
because of the prevailing situation,’’ he said.
Quizzed
on what the city council intend doing to see in to it that, the transformers
are brought to Bamenda, the mayor said:
“We are
looking for a specialized vehicle to transport the equipment from Douala to the
ENEO station in Ntarinkon where they will be installed to solve the energy
crisis in Bamenda and the North West Region as a whole,” he
indicated.
Bamenda and the north a region in general is undergoing what many have described as acute water and
Energy Crisis that have made life unbearable for the population, yet, water and
electricity bills keep sky-rocketing.
Many neighborhoods
have gone without these two basic needs for months now and the situation has
not changed with no one having a clue as to when things will get better.
