Ministry Of Justice Rejects Furniture Donated By Sen. Kemende
By Raymond Dingana
The one hundred chairs and ten tables offered by Senator Barrister Kemende to the Judicial family in the North West Region of Cameroon have been rejected.
The funiture that were to be handed over to the Courts in the month of April 2021 have not yet been received by the Ministry of Justice on grounds that, they are not necessary.
Talking to the press on Sunday July 18, 2021, San. Kemende said, he proposed Wednesday 20 of April 2021 or Friday 30 April, 2021 for the handing over of the items to the Cameroonian Judiciary in the region but till date, the items are still to be handed.
"I paid a visit to the ministry of justice to inquire why my offer to the Judicial family has not been received. I was told by the secretary general that, the gift had not found favor with the Minister and that he has indicated that, it is not necessary," he pointed out.
Rejecting a gift from elected officials in a country that is said to be a Descentralised state is a setback to the system of Descentralisation, Sen. Kemende said.
Quizzed on whether he thinks his gift was rejected based on political lines given that he is of the opposition Social Democratic Front Party SDF, Sen. Kemende said,
"One is tempted to think so though not in its entirety because there are many other areas where I have been invited to discuss issues that have to do with the people not political party lines."
On the reason why he decided to gift the Court of Appeal, NW Regional Administrative Court, Bamenda Military Court, Mezam High Court, and the Court of First instance,he said the motivation to salvage the court scenario was what he witnessed during a European Union Program to enhance the course of justice in the court rooms.
"The program provided some chairs and tables for the Magestrates in their chambers and the court rooms. In less than no time, the chairs all fell in to disrepair and before long we were lacking space to park them. It was so disappointing," he explained.
Fom every indication, Lawyers in the North West Region of Cameroon will have to continue grappling with the old chairs and tables they have been using for many years now.
He has however promised to transform the rejected offer to take care of the water needs of his neighborhood at GRA.
"Water crisis has been a problem in this area. I have seen people suffer especially in the dry season in search of water. I was finding it difficult raising the five million Francs for the project. When I will liquidate what was destined for the courts and was denied, it will help me realise that project," he said.
While lawyers have frowned at the decision to reject what they say was a gift that could have gone a long way to ameliotate their working conditions, the North West Judicial Family was not immediately available for comments.
