Bamenda II Council Providing Local Solutions To Water Crisis
By Raymond Dingana
The rains have refused to come thereby escalating a water crisis which many local authorities have been unable to salvage.
Many taps have gone dry and households are thirsty with very little or no water to wet their throats.
This is a problem that has been identitied by the Bamenda II Council with Peter Chenwi at the healm
Knowing the importance of water and refusing to ignore the old adage which says water is life, Pater Chenwi of the Bamenda II Council constructed three boreholes for three neighborhoods.
Thursday March 31,2022, Mayor Chenwi inuguated and handed over the boreholes that were already in use to the comminities.
Ntamulung and Old Town were handed over two boreholes with Solar as their prime sources of energy to make the water easily available to the thirsty population.
Mulang received a manual borehole which will serve thesame purpose of providing portable water to the community.
At a time when the authorities of the Southwest region are struggling to contain a cholera outbreak in that part of the country, with cases of the pandemic already showing its urgly face in Douala, the mayor said,
With the outbreak of cholera and taking in to account the over populated nature of some of these neighborhoods, we thought it wise to provide the population with portable water in order to keep them safe from the pandemic.
Overwhelmed with joy, the quarter head said his people are blessed out of the many quarters that make up Bamenda II,
We are blessed, water is th best you can give someone because it is life. As quarter head of Ntambang III, I am happy because we were selected to benefit out of the 72 quarters in the Bamenda II Council area.
According to Enow Patrick, a resident of Ntamulung, they have been having sleepless nights waiting for water to flow,
We stay awake most of the time waiting for CAMWATER to cause the prescious liquid flow in our homes. At times we will get up at 3:am just to check if water is flowing and it has been a challenging moment, in fact, the borehole is a stitch in time, he said.
While promising to do more in the water sector, the mayor also invited the population to engage in Environmental Friendly activities in order to preserve water for future generations.
It is now left on the beneficiary communities to make good use of the boreholes offered them by the Bamenda II Council and use it as if it were their last.
