CJTU At 20: Members Celebrate Life, Emphasize On Inclusion
By Dingana Raymond
Members of the Cameroon Journalists Trade Union, (CJTU) Northwest Chapter have in a Thanksgiving Service celebrated and thanked God for keeping them alive despite the ongoing armed conflict rocking the two restive regions of the country.
This was during the 20th anniversary of CJTU on Sunday May 15,2022, the same day the trade union was formed two decades ago.
During the thanksgiving service at the Nkwen Baptist Church in Bamenda, Sunday May 15, the president of the body charged with the protection of Journalists, Comrade Nji Ignatius told christians that,
We work under very difficult conditions in the Northwest region. We are thanking God for the fact that no Journalist has died as a result of the crisis reason why we are here in thanksgiving to God Almighty. While dishing out God's words to the christians, Rev. Njini Edward in his message titled Flee from Counterfeit Christians drawn from Judges 17 invited the congregation to stay away from counterfeit christians whom he said are nothing around the neighborhood of what they preach.
Comrade Nji also warned Christians and members of the population against counterfeit Journalists whom he likened to Citizen Journalists.
On why CBC was chosen for the event, Nji says,
Our choice of the CBC has to do with the theme which is Journalism and Inclusion and there was no better example of an institution that practices Inclusion than the CBC Health Board and the Church itself.
The church service was followed by a round table discussion on Journalism and Inclusion which was the day's theme.
Inputs came in from Nsono Josephine, Sivedzem Ernestine of Cameroon Gender and Environmental Watch, CAMGEW, Civil Society activist, John Menkefor, Lohshie Eugene, Jery Berson, Chris Mbunwe, Bahka Derick, just to name but these few.
As explained by Comrade Loshie Eugene, Persons with Disabilities don't feature that much in news articles,
Persons with Disabilities and other Minority groups are not given a fair access to opportunities in the way Journalists cover and report news stories. Most at times they concentrate just on the event without any impact on the communities. If news is reported and persons with disabilities are not taken in to consideration, then the story lacks elements of inclusion.
CJTU members taking it as a commitment to tell the stories of Persons with Disabilities and other Minority groups like never before dropped the curtains of the occasion.
