Empowering Persons With Disabilities: Just When They Feel Abandoned, Nkumu Fed Fed Comes Knocking
By Raymond Dingana
Life has not been a bed of roses for Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in Bali Nyonga, North West Region of Cameroon, a situation that has been compounded by an armed conflict affecting the population.
These challenging moments faced by the population, especially PWDs have not gone unnoticed, especially in the eyes of Nkumu Fed Fed. The organization out to better the lives of less privileged persons has been watching and taking stock of the situation.
Friday, October 14, 2022, during a campaign to sensitize the population of Bali Nyonga precisely at the Gwan Multipurpose Center on the importance of education and also to facilitate and support access to education for underprivileged children, PWDs of diverse ages were not overlooked.
Magdalene Nahyela is from Mantum in Bali Sub Division and has a mobility challenge. She has not been able to walk for years. Answering nature's call amongst others has been back-breaking.
After a very long time living in agony, Ma Mado as she is popularly called was given another opportunity to smile again thanks to the magnanimity of Nkumu Fed Fed who exhibited the climax of sisterly love to her and other Persons with Disabilities.
Ma Mado was offered a wheelchair to ease mobility while the others received support of different kinds. She summarises her ordeal in the following words accompanied by words of thanks:
“I was only in the house. I could not even go out to see those whose voices I used to hear from inside, and I could not go to the toilet all because of my legs. I thank Nkumu Fed Fed for extending my stay here on earth because I will no more feel abandoned and I will not be sad again. I can now move and see my people and spend time with them,” Ma Mado said.
Apart from the wheelchair she received, she, just like the other 30 Persons With Disabilities, also went back with a 25kg bag of rice each and other gifts including school needs for their children and toiletries thanks to former National President, Na Jala Helen Ngwanfobe and President of the Douala branch, Ma Bibiana Nji.
The 13 branches of Nkumu Fed Fed with Preseident General, Mrs Eunice Tita Tata also supported Learners who are Persons with Disabilities with school fees which were paid directly to their respective schools. School bags, pens, and books amongst others were also given to them as support.
Inclusive Education and inclusive society are goals Nkumu Fed Fed has been chasing for some time now with successes recorded if their work on the ground is anything to go by.
Born in 1996, Nkumu Fed Fed, a not for profit organization made of sisters from Bali Nyonga with the spirit to give in them has always answered calls from Persons With Disabilities from across the country.
