NW: At Public Independent Conciliator's Seminar With Mayors, Council Workers Advocate Rights Promotion
By Raymond Dingana
Some council workers working with Local and Regional Councils in the North West Region of Cameroon have appealed to the office of the Public Independent Conciliator (PIC) for the region to defend and promote their Rights.
Speaking during a two-day seminar on Rights, Duties and Ethical Compliance in Council Functioning organized by the PIC, Thursday October 27,2022, Samba Cletus, Council Developement Officer, Misaje council pleaded with PIC to clip the wings of mayors who don't respect the rights of workers:
"Council workers are dismissed without taking in to consideration what the labor code says. Those who suffer the more are workers who don't belong to the same political party with the new mayors. This is why we are pleading with the PIC to check the excesses of these mayors and stop them from discriminating against council workers who don't belong to the same political party," pleaded Samba.
Discrimination against some council workers because of their political background amongst others was raised by Nina Ambuban during her presentation on "Non -Discrimination and Mainstreaming Inclusiveness in Council Functioning." She enjoined Mayors to shun bais against workers inviting them to respect the Rights of workers irrespective of gender, political background, disability and others.

During her presentation, some Mayors and council representatives said workers are covered by the labor code and should be treated well though some still trample on the human rights of their workers.
Others invited council workers to flow with the new team in office while some pointed out that workers should not be forced to belong to the party in power and should not be discriminated against.
