Benjamin Fru Ndi, son of the late National Chairman
of the Social Democratic Front, Ni John Fru Ndi on July 28th 2023
activated a sad mood in many at the Commercial Avenue Grandstand when he recounted
what their father and other family members went through in the hands of both separatist
fighters and government forces.
This was at the Final Rally of the States Man attended by hundreds from different
political backgrounds, ages and walks of life from home and abroad, Friday July
28,2023.
Despite a three day lockdown imposed by separatist fighters operating in Mezam to frustrate the funeral ceremony, the population despite all odds came out in their thousands from Santa to Bamenda town to pay their last respect to the person they consider their hero.
Looking at the casket bearing the remains of his
father, Ni John Fru Ndi, Benjamin who is also the National Coordinator of the
Socialist Youths said his father’s life on earth was not a lab of luxury.
‘’You are all aware of what happened to our father when he came back from hospital. Armed men came and held everyone hostage at gun point. Even when he shouted, ‘I am not well, I am not well, I am just coming back from the hospital,’ they grabbed and slapped him, pulled him down on the floor and taken outside without shoes, nothing warm to wear. No respect and consideration for someone who has given his life for the people of Bamenda and the country at large,
he stated and continued that,
the most shocking part of it all is the fact that despite the cruel treatment meted on him and like a father of children, he didn’t wish his abductors bad.''
While he was explaining what his father went through
in captivity, a strange look difficult to explain appeared on the faces of some
of the officials from Yaounde who were at the rally.

This expression on their faces suddenly disappeared when Benjamin Fru Ndi took mourners far back in the 1992 when chairman Fru Ndi was under house arrest.
''In 1992 under house arrest with over 100 people, our grandmother of blessed memory, Ma Suzanna Ango brought food to the compound and was molested by a gendarme officer who asked her to go back but she refused. She told the gendarme officer that ‘you can’t stop me from going in to my compound.
Benjamin Fru Ndi further recited that:
An argument ensued and the uniform officer pushed our grandmother in to the gutter. All the young boys and girls around rushed to protect their grandmother and were called back by Ni John Fru. That was someone who was under house arrest, still, his mother was being molested yet he found it in his heart to prevent others from exercising jungle justice on the soldier who maltreated his mother. He has never been a man of violence."
He also frowned at those whom he said are against
their father being buried in Bamenda despite all what he has done for his
people.
He pointed out that no one is perfect and that the true spirit of Southern Cameroons is Disagreeing to Agree and above all, LOVE.

For those who believe in the barrel of the guns as a
way to handle conflicts, Benjamin opined that guns cannot represent what is in
the hearts of people and that guns cannot speak more than what humans can say
and does not represent the Fru Ndi’s family.
Chairman Fru Ndi’s son also appealed to all and
sundry to accompany them to Baba II village in Santa Sub Division and lay the
States Man to his final resting place on Saturday July 29,2023.
