The European Union Youth Sounding Board (YSB) organized a one-day youth exchange program in Bamenda on April 26, 2024, bringing together over 200 young individuals from the North West Region of Cameroon.

The program aimed to address the challenges faced by young people in accessing European Union (EU) opportunities and promote voter registration.

During the YSB exchange program, participants were introduced to a wide range of life-changing opportunities provided by the European Union.

These opportunities included scholarships such as the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship and the Fullbright Scholarship, as well as grants and other forms of support.

Resource persons at the event raised awareness about the various EU opportunities available to young people and encouraged them to take advantage of these opportunities.

The importance of elections and youth participation in shaping policies, laws, and the direction of the country was also emphasized.

Noel Lifogha, a member of the EU Youth Sounding Board, highlighted the three pillars of action in the EU's external youth action plan: Partnership to engage, Partnership to empower, and Partnership to connect.

The EU aims to strengthen the voice and leadership of young people, combat inequalities, equip young people with the necessary skills and tools for their development, and promote youth mobility, exchanges, and networking.

The program also focused on the significance of political engagement for youths in Cameroon. Yuh Elvis stressed the importance of voting, stating that refusing to vote indirectly supports the wrong candidates. He urged his peers to register and vote in large numbers.

Dr. Sally Mboumien,  Director of Common Action For Gender Development (COMAGEN) in Cameroon, discouraged the belief that individual votes do not bring about change.

She emphasized that not voting means relinquishing the right to complain about the outcomes and urged youths to exercise their voting rights to create the desired change.

"If you don't register, and vote, them you have no right to complain because you did little or nothing to bring change by casting your ballots for the right people,"

 said Dr. Sally.

EU Ambassador to Cameroon, Jean-Marc Châtiangner, reiterated the importance of youth participation in politics and emphasized that it is a civic right. He encouraged young people to take their political engagement to a higher level.

"It's a civic rights to participate in elections ,and it's very important,
said Ambassador.

The participants also suggested the establishment of an Inclusive Youth Empowerment Center to enhance the capacities of youth in environmental sustainability, skills development, and employment opportunities in the North West Region of Cameroon.

The event provided an opportunity for young people to network and interact with the European Union ambassador and his delegation.

The Youth Sounding Board (YSB) is an EU program that aims to involve young people in proposing policies and programs to the Cameroonian government, with a particular focus on integrating youth perspectives.
