Mayor Chenwi Peter, Brampton City Council Seal Historic Partnership Deal For Development

Mayor Peter Chenwi of Bamenda II Municipality in the North West Region of Cameroon has signed a cooperation agreement with the City Council of Brampton, Ontario, Canada. The signing ceremony whose aim is to forster sustainable development in the Bamenda II Municipality took place on Thursday, August 22, 2024.

The journey kicked off in 2022 when Mayor Chenwi embarked on a maiden visit to Victoriaville and Montreal, Canada, as part of the Forum on Decentralized Cooperation and Development (FOCODDEV) organized by the Network for Decentralized Cooperation and Sustainable Development (RC3D).

Recognizing what collaboration could bring to his municipality,Mayor Chenwi later visited Brampton, and Kitchener in December 2022, laying the groundwork for the agreement.

The areas of cooperation outlined in the cooperation agreement include amongst others;

Manpower and human resources development, Agriculture, Education,Waste management,Hygiene and sanitation, Tourism, Rural development,Environment and climate change,Road maintenance, Technological development, and General council management.

During the signing ceremony, Mayor Chenwi laid down some of his priority areas which include, Assisting school children and encouraging them to return to school through the construction and refurbishment of classrooms, as well as equipping schools and providing them with educational materials, the construction, refurbishment, and equipment of health center, theconstruction of shelters for internally displaced persons and others in need.

Expanding the equipment pool of Bamenda II Council with the acquisition of a grader and excavator was not left out.

Mayor Chenwi also went as far as highlighting the potential benefits for the City of Brampton which he said include,the deployment of manpower from Bamenda II Municipality for the agriculture sector in Brampton,Provision of artifacts for museums within the City of Brampton, Provision of agricultural products from Bamenda II Municipality, Provision of quartzite and other minerals.

Following the signing, Mayor Chenwi was awarded a Certificate of Recognition by the Brampton City Council, symbolizing the enduring bonds of friendship and cooperation between the two councils. 

In a gesture of reciprocity, Mayor Chenwi adorned Mayor Patrick Brown of Brampton in North West traditional regalia and distributed gifts to the mayor's collaborators, councilors, and staff.

On the sidelines of the agreement signing, Mayor Chenwi was also invited to discuss the upcoming African Business Center (ABC) ,the first African mall in Canada - and explore opportunities for Bamenda II Council to participate in showcasing Cameroonian products and the "Made in Cameroon" label.


This landmark cooperation agreement between Bamenda II Municipality and Brampton City Council paves the way for a mutually beneficial partnership, promising a brighter future for the people of both communities.
