Bamenda: High Tension Cable Electrocutes Worker At Construction Site

The Victim Lying Dead After He Was Electrocuted

A young man, identified only as Kenneth, was electrocuted to death by a high tension cable while working at a construction site in the New Road neighborhood, Tuesday October 15, 2024.

Kenneth went out, Tuesday October 15 insearch of daily bread only to be snatched away by the cold hand of death.

Sources indicate that the story building Kenneth was in was positioned too close to high tension cables. His lifeless body was retrieved from the scene by the Army Rescue Unit.

Residents of the New Road neighborhood in Nkwen, Bamenda III council have expressed disatisfaction, stating that they had warned on multiple occasions that the building's location was dangerous due to its proximity to the high tension cables. 

"Look at the distance between the structure and the cables. Anyone familiar with high tension cables wouldn't dare work where this young man was,"

said Njoya, a local resident. 

He added that 

There were little or no safety measures in place to protect the workers."

Despite these warnings, no action was taken to mitigate the risks posed to workers and others in the vicinity.

Bamenda is currently experiencing what observers describe as chaotic construction practices, with regulations largely ignored. Many believe that if local authorities were serious about safety, the structure would never have been built so close to the high tension cables.

Residents hope that this sad incident will serve as a wake up call for authorities to enforce stricter regulations in the construction sector so as to avoid incidents like this from happening.
