During a one-day Information and Education Seminar organized by the Office of the Public Independent Conciliator (PIC) for the North West, held on Wednesday, November 13th, Tamfu Simon Fai made a solemn appeal to media practitioners to join him in advocating for good governance, which has largely eluded many municipal councils in the region.

He informed the more than 70 journalists from the seven divisions that make up the North West Region that:

"The media should continue to accompany us because promoting good governance in councils is a permanent activity. We want to ensure that our people enjoy the amenities provided by the government, and they may not benefit from them if they are not informed about them."

According to Bakah Derrick, an administrator at HiltopVoices.com, it is reassuring to know that there is an institution focused on the development of the people.

"It reaffirms my confidence that at least I have an institution that addresses our development issues. One of the challenges we face in the North West Region is that leadership sometimes acts as if they are the only ones entitled to information and are not accountable to anyone,"
said Bakah Derrick.

He added that with the support of the Public Independent Conciliator, any media practitioner who wishes to report on local governance and development can do so comfortably, thanks to this information and education seminar.

According to Article 4 of Decree No. 2020/773 of December 24, 2020, the Office of the Public Independent Conciliator is tasked with conducting investigations into the functioning of regional and council services at the request of five Parliamentarians or five Regional Councilors. The office is also responsible for preparing annual reports on the relationship between citizens and regional and council services, and for proposing statutory and regulatory texts to improve the quality of these services.

As of October 30, 2024, the institution has received a total of 189 petitions:

- 30 in 2021

- 44 in 2022

- 48 in 2023

- 67 in 2024

Of these, 177 have been addressed, and 12 are still under review. The Office of the Public Independent Conciliator has also organized campaigns for the free issuance of civil status documents, promoted citizen participation in local development and governance, and conducted outreach and sensitization visits to all seven divisions of the North West Region, among other activities.
