The crusade to increase women's participation in project management within councils has continued to intensify, with women leading the charge.

During her thesis defense on "Gender Perspectives in Project Management within Municipal Councils: The Case of Bamenda I, II, III," Saturday, January 25, 2024, at the Bamenda office of the Pan African Institute For Development,West Africa (PAID-WA), Nina Ambuban Agyingi, a Gender Equality Advocate, noted that despite the existence of national and international instruments aimed at promoting gender equality, little has been done to implement these frameworks.

She explained that this lack of action accounts for the minimal representation of women within municipal councils, particularly in the area of project management. It was this gap, among others, that motivated Nina Ambuban who also serves as Research Officer Number 5 at the Office of the Public Independent Conciliator of the North West Region to investigate the issue and propose solutions.

"Despite the fact that we have internal instruments addressing gender equality, and that we are signatories to international agreements coupled with our constitution that promotes gender equality, little has been done to put these provisions into practice. We still see that women occupy very low positions within municipal councils,"
Nina stated.She added that ,

"When they are assigned projects, these often come with little or no funding because there is a perception that the output from a woman is different from that of a man, stemming from cultural beliefs that men are better decision-makers."

She elaborated on her findings regarding gender issues.

"One of the major problems is the limited funds allocated to gender issues in municipal councils. Stakeholder analysis is often disregarded because many projects are executed without consulting the population; they are not based on actual needs."

To improve gender equality in project management and related areas, Nina recommended that

"council staff need training on gender issues, particularly on policies that promote gender equality within municipal councils. Additionally, creating focal points to monitor and evaluate gender equality issues would help ensure a balanced approach in every council project."

The jury, composed of Dr. Bamnjo Hermann and her supervisor, Dr. Tapah Lucas, appreciated her work, awarding her an A+. They also encouraged her to share her findings with municipal councils to aid in advancing gender equality.
