Bamenda Market Fire Victims Grieve Over Gov't's Neglect,Want Shops Back After Reconstruction

By Raymond Dingana Victims of the February 22, 2024, fire incident at the Bamenda main market say the government has abandoned them despite losing everything in the inferno. Over 300 shops were destroyed, leaving hundreds stranded. Even before the first anniversary of the inferno, 13 of those affected have died due to trauma, high blood pressure, and other health issues, while the survivors continue to languish with nowhere to turn. Bamenda Main Market Fire Victims Carrying Placards In Protest Last Friday, February 21, during an ecumenical service at the Big Mankon Cathedral, the victims carried placards bearing messages such as:   "We are still waiting for government assistance; we have nowhere to turn," said one of the victims. This is contained in a document titled: Message of  the Paramount Fon, HRM Kenneth Assobo III to the population of Pinyin Clan.   In what societal watchers have described by as a rare statement from a traditional authority following the killing of his people, the Fon of Pinyin, His Majesty Kenneth Assobo III, has condemned what he describes as the senseless killings of their beloved youths, six of whom were tragically lost just last Sunday night (February 23, 2025) in Mamben Pinyin. The traditional authority stated that these innocent lives were taken far too soon, and the grief they share as a community is immeasurable. This was during a panel discussion that followed a visit by CAMASEJ Bamenda members to CRTV NW, Wednesday February 26,2025. Led by Sah Terence Animbom, President of CAMASEJ Bamenda, the aim of the visit was to tear down all barriers thwarting effective collaboration between journalists of state owned CRTV NW, and those of the independent media. The Njimocho Bridge project aims to link Njimocho Quarter to other areas such as Zem, Wumngang, and Njembeng, all within the Mbengwi Subdivision. This project, valued at 28 million FCFA, is a donation from Chief Dr. Ndang Kenneth and his wife, Mafor Dr. Mrs. Ndang Delphine, through the Kendely Foundation.
