The enstoolment rituals of His Royal Highness (HRH) Foh Eugene Ngwashi I took place on Sunday, February 16, 2025, drawing thousands of Akum’s sons and daughters to the esplanade of the Fon's Palace. This historical event also saw the installation of a twenty member cabinet by the Fon tasked with driving the village's development forward.

The ceremony, a blend of spirituality and tradition, highlighted the community's deep respect for its heritage and aspirations for the future. HRH Ngwashi I emphasized that the occasion was primarily an oath taking ceremony.

"It was an oath taking event that I had to undertake to elevate the village to the next level. That’s why you saw the elites come in large numbers, along with villagers from all corners of the community, to support me as I take my place on the throne that they have given to me,"
said HRH Ngwashi I.

He added that,

"It consisted of four different aspects. The first aspect was the throne that I had to take. The second aspect was the spear, which I will use to command my people. The stick I held in my hand was meant for the support that the village is going to give me. The fourth was the cup from which I will drink fresh wine given by my people, symbolizing that my people will support me and give me peace of mind to advance the village. I think that was the significance of today's celebrations."

In a move to transform Akum, also known as "Small London," HRH Ngwashi I appointed a 23 member cabinet, which he stated would assist him in developing the village.

"The 23 members of the cabinet installed will assist me in the tasks ahead. The village is an institution, and as a traditional institution, it requires members of the cabinet. Innovations include building a secretariat for the palace, with someone in charge specifically, the prince of the palace who will handle all the paperwork."

He continued,

"We also established the seat of the Bonnifor. The Bonnifor is a traditional seat that represents both praise and challenges. There are times when that seat can feel very hot, so we need people to come and appease the Fon, and help me appease the village. That is why I co-opted one of my sisters, a reverend sister, into the cabinet, who will someday assist me in appeasing the village. These are the three innovations."

The Fon expressed high expectations for his cabinet members, including their physical presence, which he said is necessary to elevate Akum to the next level.

Among those installed was Chief Dr. Muma-Fo Ngwashi I, who stated he would work with the Fon for the growth of Akum village and the preservation of the culture and traditions of the people of Akum. He noted that the cabinet is expected to spearhead initiatives aimed at fostering growth and progress within the village.

During the ceremony, there were heartfelt appeals for support from all residents of Akum, both locally and abroad, urging them to rally behind their newly installed Fon.

"I am calling on the people of Akum, in my capacity as the Ntumfor of Akum, to give this Fon the collaboration and cooperation he needs to carry Akum forward, just as our father did,"
noted Ntumfor Tumasang Martin.

The enstoolment ceremony signifies not only the ascension of a new leader but also serves as a powerful symbol of the community's legacy and future aspirations. The ceremonial act of sitting on a specially carved stool marks the official assumption of leadership and authority, reinforcing the cultural significance of the occasion.

As Akum looks toward a promising future, the installation of HRH Ngwashi I and his cabinet marks a pivotal moment in the village's history, poised to drive forward development and unity among its people.

HRH Eugene Ngwashi I of Akum, the 13th traditional ruler of Modern Akum is a  Superintendent of Police by profession. He succeeds his father, HRH Fon Ndikum George Ngwashi II, who passed away on May 26, 2024 after ruling Akum village for 66 years.
